Join instructor Michele Pietrzak as she explores multiple media in this six week course. Instinctually we know art is important for our children. Art is a fundamental component of what makes us human. Students in this class will experience art as a form of self expression and their creative skills will grow naturally. Together we will learn about keeping a sketchbook, how to “see” like an artist, and best of all play with fiber, watercolor, chalk pastel, acrylic, ink and more. Come experience art, you’ll be glad you did!
Join students of all ages in this freeform sewing class to learn the basics of sewing from learning about your machine to creating a variety of easy projects. Machine sewing is a major component of the class but a small amount of hand sewing will be taught as well, including sewing a button and hand stitching to close seams or add embellishment. Students work at their own pace and sew in a light-hearted environment and in small classes with plenty of one-on-one attention. Projects will be different in the two sessions. A supply list will be sent after registration confirmation.
Award winning fiber artist Wendy Smith-Wood is teaching the rare Japanese techniques from which her museum quality work is made. From beginner to intermediate. Arashi shibori is the Japanese art of tying silk on a pole and then applying dyes. When the silk is set and untied, texture and color are left in the scarf. This workshop is aimed at those who have no previous experience of tying or dyeing silk. Dye Safety and the basics of dyes and fibers will be covered. We will use predominantly silk, or protein fibers and acid dyes. We will learn how to use resist techniques (shibori) and concentrate on pole-tying (arashi shibori) to create color patterns and textures. This class is not prescriptive – I will follow the interests of the participants and include playful and interesting options according to class preferences. During the weekend students can purchase more silk items to work on, or bring their own silk fabrics or clothing to experiment on. FYI: Students will generally manage to produce 2-4 shibori items per day; some prolific individuals manage more.
